The journal also covers viruses of these organisms and their organelles and their interactions with other living systems, where the focus is on the eukaryotic cell.

Geomicrobiology Journal is a unified vehicle for research and review articles in this rapidly growing field. Articles deal with microbial transformations of materials composing the earthís crust, including oceans, seas, lakes, bottom sediments, soils, mineral deposits, and rocks, and the geological impact these transformations have to present or have had over geologic time. In this context, the functions of bacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi, micro-algae, protoists, and related micro-organisms as geomechanical or geochemical agents are examined. Articles may stress the nature of specific micro-organisms and their activities in a geomicrobial context, or the geological consequences of geomicrobial activity. The journal covers basic topics such as: microbial weathering of rocks; microbial roles in formation and degradation of specific minerals; mineralization of organic matter; subsurface microbiology; biogeochemical cycling of elements; isotopic fractionation and paleomicrobiology. Applied topics such as bioleaching microbiology and petroleum geomicrobiological prospecting, and groundwater microbiology are also covered. Included are the application of new techniques such as molecular and nano- and microscale.

International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM), formerly International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology (IJSB), is the official journal of record for new bacterial taxa. Now in its 51st year (before 1966 it was known as the International Bulletin of Bacteriological Nomenclature and Taxonomy), the journal is the cornerstone of the ever-expanding field of microbial systematics. IJSEM publishes papers dealing with all phases of the systematics of bacteria, yeasts and yeast-like organisms, including taxonomy, nomenclature, identification, phylogeny, evolution, biodiversity, characterization and culture preservation. Its scope covers phylogenetic and evolutionary aspects of all micro-organisms, including the protists such as protozoa and algae, and will now also publish molecular environmental papers with a strong systematics content. Its international Editorial Board ensures the highest standards of peer review.

The Journal of Phycology was founded in 1965 by the Phycological Society of America. The Journal is a leading international journal and publishes research from all over the world. All aspects of basic and applied research on algae are included to provide a common medium for the ecologist, physiologist, cell biologist, molecular biologist, morphologist, oceanographer, taxonomist, geneticist, and biochemist. The Journal also welcomes research that emphasizes algal interactions with other organisms and the roles of algae as components of natural ecosystems. Papers are accepted on the basis of their original and meritorious data and ideas; our focus is on research articles but mini-reviews and reviews are solicited on especially important and timely subjects. Comments, which are reviewed, may describe methods or equipment, discuss papers previously published in the Journal, or discuss other topics of interest to our readership. Other features include Algae Highlights, which draws attention to some of the important papers being published in each issue of the Journal or elsewhere, and Book Reviews.

The following topics are included: differentiation of sexes including meiosis differentiation of male and female gametophytes gene expression during male and female gametophyte development biotechnological use of pollen pollen-stigma interaction recognition and interaction of gametes events of fertilization mechanisms of gamete attraction and fusion mechanisms of incompatibility and incongruity breeding technology of sexual systems overcoming breeding barriers application and mechanisms of gametocides mechanisms of apomixis and other sex derivatives. Primary emphasis is placed on the experimental approach using biochemical molecular biophysical and immunological methods but descriptive reports based on submicroscopical and cytochemical methods are not excluded. Special attention is given to the application of new insights in sexual systems for aquaculture of algae biotechnology of microorganisms and plant breeding.
