Animal Biology, is formally a continuation of the Netherlands Journal of Zoology, the official journal of the Royal Dutch Zoological Society since its foundation in 1872 (until 952 know as Archives Néerlandaises de Zoologie). As such it can boast a rich tradition. However, the Board of the Society felt that modern zoological research require a new international approach for the journal. The society has, therefore, appointed a brand new Executive Editor and a completely new, international Editorial Board, consisting of leading scientists in zoology. The new editorial team will consider manuscript submission form the wide field of zoology and accept only those that pas the refereeing process, where quality and originality of the work are the main criteria. Animal Biology publishes articles from all quarters of zoology, including ecology, behaviour, evolution, morphology, neurobiology, developmental biology, physiology, cognition, endocrinology, systematics, genomics and theoretical biology.

The relationship between mental disorders and reproductive functions in women has fascinated scientific thinkers for centuries. Nevertheless it has been well documented that sex and gender differences in mental illness and their treatment are understudied until now. In many cases the role of the obstetric-gynecologic event or condition in the psychiatric illness is not recognized: Many women have questions and concerns about psychiatric aspects of menstruation and menopause. Feelings about hysterectomy or the loss or termination of a pregnancy may play a role in the dynamics of a current conflict. Many manias depressions and other psychoses are related to endocrinology. Sexual abuse is a frequent feature of the history of patients with several major psychiatric disorders. Current developments in reproductive technology are new challenges for psychiatrists as well. The editors of "Archives of Women's Mental Health" hope that this journal will assist clinicians teachers and researchers to incorporate knowledge of all aspects of women's mental health into current and future clinical care and research. The journal's scope includes psychodynamics social and biological aspects of all psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders in women. The editors especially welcome interdisciplinary studies focussing on the interface between psychiatry psychosomatics obstetrics and gynecology. The exchange of knowledge between psychiatrists and obstetrician-gynecologists is one of the major aims of the journal. "Archives of Women's Mental Health" publish rigorously reviewed research papers short original communications case reports review articles book reviews and letters to the editors on psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders in women related to the menstrual cycle pregnancy childbirth and perimenopause psychiatric aspects of childloss and abortion sterilization and perimenopause maternal mental illness and disorders of mother-to-infant attachment and all other aspects of motherhood and mental health gender differences in psychopathology psychopharmacology and epidemiology of psychiatric disorders psychotropic drugs and the safety of their use during pregnancy and breastfeeding the association between ovarian hormones and neurochemistry and other biological aspects of psychiatric disorders in women psychosocial cultural and ethnic aspects of psychiatric disorders in women psychiatric aspects of domestic violence liaison psychiatry in women's hospital planning specialized mental health services for women hormonal treatment of psychiatric disorders related to women's reproductive system influence of menstrual cycle on pharmacokinetics of psychotropic drugs psychological aspects of cancer in women sexual disorders in women alcohol and drug abuse in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology contraceptives and their effects on women's mental health historical aspects of women's mental health care and research.

The aim of Biogenic Amines is to meet the demand for an international interdisciplinary journal integrating the publication of all aspects of research on biogenic amines and amino acid transmitters, their relating compounds and their interacting phenomena. The journal fulfils this aim by publishing regular research papers and short communications. Biogenic Amines welcomes submissions of papers which report original research data on catecholamines, serotonin and interacting compounds (amino acids, peptides, acetylcholine, phenol amines, histamine, polyamines and other biologically active amines). Papers from both basic research (methodology, histology, neurochemistry, biochemistry, enzymology, receptor studies, pharmacology, physiology and endocrinology) and from clinical research (neurology, psychiatry, cardiovascular studies, internal medicine, gynaecology, immunology and oncology) will be considered.

Cardiovascular Diabetology is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal that publishes articles on all aspects of the diabetes/cardiovascular interrelationship and the dysmetabolic syndrome; this includes genetic, experimental, clinical, pharmacological, epidemiological, molecular biology and laboratory research. Cardiovascular Diabetology aims to provide an address for all types of scientific communications related to the diabetes/cardiovascular interrelationship and the dysmetabolic syndrome. The impressive correlation between coronary artery disease and alterations in glucose metabolism has raised the likelihood that atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes may share common antecedents. Large-vessel atherosclerosis can precede the development of diabetes, suggesting that rather than atherosclerosis being a complication of diabetes, both conditions may share genetic and environmental antecedents, a "common soil". Insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia lead to the development of the dysmetabolic syndrome, consisting of abdominal obesity, impaired fasting glucose, high triglyceride levels, low high-density lipoprotein levels and hypertension. Taking into consideration that this cluster of abnormalities is shared by both diabetes type 2 and atherosclerosis, the American Heart Association stated in 1999 that "diabetes is a cardiovascular disease". The worldwide prevalence of the dysmetabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus - especially type 2, which makes up about 90% of the diabetic population - has continuously and rapidly increased during the last decades. The number of diabetic individuals is to double within 30 years, reaching 300 million in the year 2025. Premature atherosclerosis contributes to 75% of deaths among individuals with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, 25% of patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes already have coronary artery disease. Diabetes mellitus has become a diagnosis of considerable and ominous importance in cardiovascular medicine, related to numerous hospital readmissions and high mortality and morbidity. Despite considerable improvements in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, there is alarming evidence that patients with diabetes have hardly experienced any advantages from recent therapeutic achievements compared with their non-diabetic counterparts. Thus, a journal specifically dedicated to these issues is essential.
