The SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics publishes research articles on the mathematics applied to the physical, engineering, and life sciences. Submitted articles should contribute to the mathematical understanding of specific scientific problems or to solution techniques useful in applications. Manuscripts applying known methods to previously solved problems or providing mathematical analysis in the absence of significant scientific motivation or application will not be accepted. Appropriate subject areas include the physical, engineering, financial, and life sciences. Examples are problems in fluid mechanics, including reaction-diffusion problems, sedimentation, combustion, and transport theory; solid mechanics; elasticity; electromagnetic theory and optics; mathematical biology, including population dynamics, biomechanics, and physiology; linear and nonlinear wave propagation, including scattering theory and wave propagation in random media; inverse problems; nonlinear dynamics; stochastic processes, including queueing theory and finance; signal processing; and image processing. Mathematical techniques include asymptotic methods, bifurcation theory, dynamical systems theory, and probabilistic and statistical methods. The foregoing list is not exhaustive, however, and papers addressing the mathematics involved in new applications areas not listed here are also welcome.

The SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization publishes original research articles on the mathematics and applications of control theory and certain parts of optimization theory. Papers considered for publication must be significant at both the mathematical level and the level of applications or potential applications. Papers containing mostly routine mathematics or those with no discernible connection to control theory or optimization will not be considered for publication. From time to time, the journal will also publish authoritative surveys of important subject areas in control theory and optimization whose level of maturity permits a clear and unified exposition. The broad areas mentioned above are intended to encompass a wide range of mathematical techniques and scientific, engineering, economic, and industrial applications. These include stochastic and deterministic methods in control, estimation, and identification of systems; modeling and realization of complex control systems; the numerical analysis and related computational methodology of control processes and allied issues; and the development of mathematical theories and techniques that give new insights into old problems or provide the basis for further progress in control theory and optimization. Within the field of optimization, the journal specializes in those parts of the theory concerned with the dynamics of deterministic or stochastic systems in continuous or discrete time or otherwise dealing with differential equations, dynamics, infinite-dimensional spaces, or fundamental issues in variational analysis and geometry. Contributions to numerical methodology are also welcome in accordance with these aims, especially as related to large-scale problems and decomposition as well as to fundamental questions of convergence and approximation.

The SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis features research articles of the highest quality employing innovative analytical techniques to treat problems in the natural sciences. Every paper should have content that is primarily analytical and that employs mathematical methods in such areas as partial differential equations, the calculus of variations, functional analysis, approximation theory, harmonic or wavelet analysis, or dynamical systems. Secondly, every paper should relate to a model for natural phenomena in such areas as fluid mechanics, materials science, quantum mechanics, biomathematics, mathematical physics, or to the computational analysis of such phenomena.

The SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis publishes original research articles of the highest quality concerning the development and analysis of numerical algorithms. Articles should present a decisive advance in the design and/or mathematical analysis of a significant numerical method or class of methods. Appropriate topics include the rigorous study of convergence of algorithms, their accuracy, their stability, and their computational complexity. Results in mathematical analysis, such as functional analysis or approximation theory, are appropriate to the extent that they contribute to the analysis of numerical algorithms. The inclusion of computational results is appropriate when it helps to advance the understanding of the behavior or the range of applicability of the algorithms under study. However, papers consisting primarily of computation are usually best suited for other journals. Articles may focus on applications of numerical methods, especially new applications, but such articles should demonstrate an interplay between the application and the algorithm design or analysis.

The purpose of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing is to foster the advancement of computational techniques for the solution of large-scale problems arising in scientific computation. Apart from quality, the principal criterion for acceptance of a paper is its relevance to the development and implementation of the computational methods needed to solve such problems. Papers should be written so that they are accessible and of interest to a wide variety of readers in scientific computation and should address new computational algorithms and techniques. Papers describing novel computational solutions to problems motivated by statistical considerations and/or computational solutions to problems arising from experimental and observational data are encouraged. Papers of a theoretical nature are appropriate, provided that relevance to applications in science and engineering is demonstrated, and computational results illustrate the effectiveness of new algorithms. Papers on applications are desirable if their thrust is to illuminate the methods used or to develop new computational methods; papers should contain enough information about the application to orient other computational scientists but should avoid details of interest only to the applications specialist. Papers addressing high-performance aspects of scientific computation are particularly encouraged, provided they are numerically useful. However, papers that have a significant architectural content are acceptable only if they are clearly useful to the reader in developing new computational techniques or if they shed light on the scope and limitations of the theory involved. Papers describing mathematical software may be appropriate, but only if they introduce new algorithms or make substantial improvements in existing algorithms.

The SIAM Review consists of five sections, all containing articles of broad interest. Survey and Review features papers with a deliberately integrative and up-to-date perspective on a major topic in applied or computational mathematics or scientific computing. Problems and Techniques contains focused, specialized papers about interesting problems, techniques, and tools, including descriptions of mathematical formulations, solution methods, and open questions. SIGEST highlights a recent paper from one of SIAM's nine specialized research journals, chosen on the basis of exceptional interest to the entire SIAM community and revised and condensed as needed for greater accessibility. Education consists primarily of individual modules that are self-contained presentations of specific topics in applied mathematics, scientific computation, or their applications; each module provides the primary material needed to teach a given topic as well as supplementary material. The Book Reviews section contains a featured review that provides an overview of several books in a subject area. Shorter reviews of individual books are also included.

The International Journal of Signal Processing (SPIJ) lays emphasis on all aspects of the theory and practice of signal processing (analogue and digital) in new and emerging technologies. It features original research work, review articles, and accounts of practical developments. It is intended for a rapid dissemination of knowledge and experience to engineers and scientists working in the research, development, practical application or design and analysis of signal processing, algorithms and architecture performance analysis (including measurement, modeling, and simulation) of signal processing systems. As SPIJ is directed as much at the practicing engineer as at the academic researcher, we encourage practicing electronic, electrical, mechanical, systems, sensor, instrumentation, chemical engineers, researchers in advanced control systems and signal processing, applied mathematicians, computer scientists among others, to express their views and ideas on the current trends, challenges, implementation problems and state of the art technologies.
